Case Study

Project Info

This was a poster I made in graphic design class, made to advertise Fear 101, the haunted house.

We were all assigned one of the seven deadly sins, seven heavenly virtues, or a tarot card, and I was given the sin of pride.

Assignment Details

The only real restrictions were that the poster had to be 20x60 inches, and have the title and Fear 101 somewhere on it.

It was a little difficult to come up with something that would fit such a tall canvas, I'm not used to working so vertical.

rough sketches

Sketches

My first doodles and sketches.

I started by looking up things associated with being prideful. It's a little difficult to read in the image, but I wrote down the sun, the color violet, knights and horses, and peacocks. Peacock feathers, the sun, and a little bit of purple is all from this list that made it to the actual drawing. I chose a dragon for no particular reason other than I like drawing dragons, and gave it some feathers to tie in with the peacock.

flat colors

Flats

The finished lines and flat colors, before any rendering.

I ended up getting rid of a lot of the peacock feathers because I was having trouble drawing them, but I brought a couple back. I also added some gems and gold rings. I think I'd wanted to decorate the dragon with more jewelry, but I apprently forgot.
